DEBT CONSOLIDATION SCAM: It’s something we’re all beginning to hear about

Have you ever gotten a phone call or placed the call yourself to a company claiming to be able to repair your ill-fated credit report? If so, then you know you aren’t alone because you probably were told of the thousands of people, just like you, who have faced credit problems. You heard the voices of the other telemarketers in the call center talking to their clients too. You knew it was a legitimate place because you could hear the concern in the person’s voice as you spoke to him or her and best of all, they were willing to offer you a solution and suddenly, they were your best friend.

It’s something many people have experienced. They are confronted with the possibility of someone wanting to help them remove the negative junk from their credit report. These consumers are promised a rose garden and instead all they get is mounting debt while a company takes a few tugs at their bank account whenever they feel like drawing out $80-$100.

Companies using the phone to scam people are typically discovered sooner or later because they eventually can’t help themselves. They may start out scamming a few people for a few dollars and then they become greedy and sooner or later, they’re digging into your accounts deeper.

Debt consolidation companies often fall victim to scam artists. These scammers set up shop and begin to promote their business as a reputable company only interested in helping their clients get out of debt and stay out of it but before long, they begin taking money from the accounts they have on file and by the time numerous reports set off the alarms, the company has bailed and with the money of thousands of people in tow.

One true indication of a scammer in the debt consolidation industry can often be found in their empty promise to take the debt and toss it away. They promise your debt will simply disappear. Doesn’t that sound fabulous? It would be but it isn’t true. No one can help you do that. You have to bide your time and work at cleaning up your credit. Unfortunately, a debt consolidation company can’t just wipe away the tears.

Most of the biggest scams in the debt consolidation industry are geared toward the people already in financial dire straights. They have made bad decisions and continue to do so without proper counseling. These scammers offer up what they need and promise to help them manage their debt. Then, they dig into the person’s personal accounts and find out how they can absolutely steal money from them. By the time, the person realizes it, it’s usually too late. It then takes time and a lot of effort to get the scammers off your back. So, what can you do? Play it smart and never give your banking information to someone you don’t know.
